Of design…
Imagine one thin, tall peasant man with a big moustache, smoking his pipe. A peasant you like and respect, one whose everyday objects represent rational functionality, abiding structure, and ornamentation nourishing for the heart and mind. The new fashionable terms for this are rationality and emotionality.
Take this old fellow and place him into an urban environment. Let him marvel at the dames and stand in wonder seeing some ruin pubs, let him drift a bit with the crowd and the metropolitan rhythm of life.
Later, when he revives a bit and starts to understand the dynamics of the city, ask him to make objects for you. Things you, the city guy just need.
Now that is me: a ‘neopeasant’ in the most positive sense of the word.
And what do I think of design? Where my place is in creating objects? The most authentic answer was given by a master of mine: ‘our place is exactly in between our parents and our children’. Take your intellectual heritage, add your best knowledge and let your children be inspired by it.
